Dance Classes

Beginner Classes - Join the Fun! Great Plain Squares is actively seeking new dancers of every level. The more people on the floor, the greater the fun! Our classes assume no prior dancing knowledge of any style at all. If you can Walk then you can square dance. With our class you will progress through basic calls to the Mainstream level by attending every week. Join us in September and January for the start of a new year of dancing, fun, stimulation, and laughs.

The first dance is called Fun Night in September and January from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Call us (Paul at 781-801-0725) to learn more, or just show up. If you can't make the date, we also accept beginners on the following week. After that, we are off and running! The first class is free and successive classes are $10 for adults/$3 for children 10-15. We dance most Wednesdays at Carter Methodist Church, 800 Highland Avenue, Needham.

Hello Class Members!

Now that you have entered the world of square dancing I want to let you see a little more.

One the best places to learn square dancing is through the pleasant videos at Saddlebrooke Squares where you can go to confirm your memory of calls and see how experienced dancers move. Another site with animated diagrams is called Tamtwirlers.org/Taminations. [To use that site, click on the “Mainstream Level” of dancing at the top and pick from the list of calls. It is also possible to download the images to your phone or device so you don't need an Internet connection. Definitions are given on the left and a list of starting formations are on the right. For your amusement, check out some of the higher levels of calls. They get crazy! (And only the very best dancers can do them.)]

Learning the calls is great. Going off to a class level dance is the only way you will finally get out and express your new skills. As we all know, Bob Butler is the greatest teacher and caller there is! So, put all that knowledge to work and get out to a class level dance and have some fun! A list of upcoming class level dances will be presented on this page.

What is Square Dancing?

We, the members of the Great Plain Squares in Needham, MA, want to share with you why we love square dancing and why we hope you will join us.

Square dancing is done in groups of 8 making up one square. We have a caller who is at the microphone, singing out calls that tell the dancers how to move around a square. For example, one easy call would be “all hold hands and circle left”. It gets harder (but more fun) after that. So, you have to take lessons that last about 16 weeks in order to dance with the group (which we call a “club”).

Singles and couples are welcome. Although we have members of all ages, there are plenty of older people.

We want to be social as well as engage in dancing, so we have frequent breaks to rest and socialize. Square dancing is not a competitive activity nor is it an individual activity. We are part of a square and try to help the square be successful and happy while dancing to the caller’s instructions.

We give beginner lessons on Wednesday nights at Carter Church in Needham. If you leave your email or phone we will contact you when lessons for beginners resume.

The cost is $10 per person per weekly lesson. There is no dress code but smooth-soled shoes work better than sneakers that have rubber on the bottom. You can wear anything you like on class nights. If you come to a Saturday night dance, you might want to dress up a bit more.

To conclude, square dancing is great for your mood, your mind and your body. It is an activity that keeps you young as you move around in your square. It is even portable – if you visit a different state, you can dance with their square dance clubs using the same calls you learned here.
